Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Law: Call for applications for admission

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for admission into the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Law programme tenable in the Private Law and Public Law and Clinical Legal Education Departments.

Eligibility:

  1. A Master’s degree in law or legal studies obtained from accredited institutions of higher learning, accompanied by an above average transcript; and 

  2. Personal Statement (500-1000 words) that describes the applicant’s motivation and capacity for pursuing the Ph.D. in Law degree;

  3. Research Proposal in private or public law that describes the applicants PhD research project.

Duration: 3-4 years (full-time) and 5-6 years (part-time).

Application requirements: an application should include the following;

  1. A filled 2024 PG1 form to be downloaded here (click to download)

  2. A detailed CV;

  3. Certified or notarized copies of academic transcripts and certificates;

  4. Two letters of reference from traceable referees (one of which shall be an academician and the other one may be a professional referee) and to be submitted in sealed envelopes or as a PDF attachment;

  5. A copy of a bank deposit slip for the application fee of MK20,000 for Malawian nationals and US$50 for international applicants. Please deposit the money into the following account: Chanco Sundry Income, Account No: 282553, held at the National Bank of Malawi, Zomba Service Centre;

  6. Candidates MUST sign on the 2024 PG 1 form that they have satisfied all the general entry requirements.

Fee Structure: MK4,500,000.00 for Malawian nationals, or US$5,000 for international students per year for full-time candidates and MK3000,000.00 for Malawian nationals and US$ 3,000 for international students per year for part-time candidates. 

Procedure for Submitting Applications 

All applications should be sent electronically to postgradlaw@unima.ac.mw and pgstudies@unima.ac.mw  or otherwise to Postgraduate Studies, University of Malawi, P.O. Box 280, Zomba.  Applications should be clearly marked as PhD Law application.

Applications are welcome throughout the year but for admission into September 2024 intake, send applications by 17 May 2024.
