Tanzanian High Commissioner Visits UNIMA, Commends Growth of Kiswahili Teaching
On Wednesday, 20 May 2026, the University of Malawi hosted Her Excellency Agnes Richard Kayola, High Commissioner of the United Republic of Tanzania to Malawi, who paid a courtesy visit to the institution. The meeting focused on the progress the University has made in the teaching of Kiswahili, which has continued to attract growing interest from both students and members of the general public. Discussions also centred on preparations for the forthcoming commemoration of World Kiswahili Language Day, which falls on 7th July each year.
Speaking as host, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Malawi, Professor Samson Sajidu, expressed appreciation to the High Commissioner for the visit and for Tanzania’s continued support towards the promotion of the Kiswahili language and culture.
In her remarks, Her Excellency Kayola thanked the University for the warm reception and reaffirmed her commitment to supporting the teaching of Kiswahili at the institution. She further pledged sponsorship for top-performing students studying Kiswahili to undertake a study visit to Mzumbe University in Tanzania.
The Tanzanian delegation comprised Her Excellency Agnes Richard Kayola and Ms Joyce Kimey, Minister Plenipotentiary. The University of Malawi welcoming committee included Professor Samson Sajidu, Vice-Chancellor; Dr Sunduzwayo Madise, Deputy Vice-Chancellor; Mr Martin Matululu, Registrar; and Dr Emmanuel Ngwira, Executive Dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences.
