ACTUARIAL SCIENCE HONOURS STUDENTS DATE FINANCE AND INSURANCE BUSINESS GURUS

On 31st May 2024, final year BSc in Actuarial Science (Honours) students held a 1-day symposium at Amaryllis Hotel in Blantyre. The Symposium, organized under the theme “Cultivating Local Expertise: Unlocking Malawi’s Actuarial Potential”, drew key players and potential employers from the finance and banking industry such as the Reserve Bank of Malawi (RBM), Smile Life Insurance, Vanguard Insurance, Zamara, National Insurance Company of Malawi (NICO), Old Mutual as well as the Insurance Institute of Malawi and Insurance Association of Malawi.

The students showcased their final year research results in areas such as digital currencies, climate extremes, agricultural insurance and life expectancy. Speaking during the symposium as Guest of Honor, Director of Pensions and Insurance at RBM, Paul Nyirenda, commended the students for such high-quality research work. He urged the graduating class to pursue professional courses so that Malawi can increase its population of qualified actuaries. On her part, Dr Lilian Moyo, Managing Director of Vanguard Insurance, challenged the graduating class to explore how best Malawi as a nation can optimise benefits from their rare skills and competencies.  

On behalf of the University of Malawi, the Executive Dean of Natural and Applied Sciences, Professor Cosmo Ngongondo, thanked all stakeholders for supporting the Actuarial Science programme in many ways, including providing internships. Managing Director of Smile Life Insurance, Stain Singo, commended UNIMA for the excellent interns his firm gets from the programme.

The event ended with a gift presentation from the graduating class to the stakeholders.
