Excellence celebrated: UNIMA awards 1,767 graduates

Parents and guardians from various districts across the country gathered at the Great Hall to celebrate their wards' achievements on 29th April, 2026. A total of 1,767 men and women graduated with various qualifications. The graduation ceremony under the Federal University comprised two sessions, and featured graduates from the University of Malawi (UNIMA), Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS), and Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (KUHES).

The graduation was presided over by the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Malawi, Professor Samson Sajidu. The Minister of Education was represented by Dr Ken Ndala, the Principal Secretary for the Ministry of Education in Malawi. Vice-Chancellors from MUBAS, KUHES, Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR), among others, were also in attendance at the graduation.

In his remarks, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Samson Sajidu congratulated all the men and women who graduated, saying their hard work had paid off. He further urged them, as they entered the workforce, to be good citizens, uphold the values of integrity and professionalism, and desist from corruption.

Professor Sajidu highlighted some of the achievements of the university, including the expansion of academic programmes to meet emerging national and global needs, strengthening research and innovation through increased publications and partnerships, and improvements in digital learning platforms and infrastructure to support flexible learning, among others.

The University of Malawi also celebrated its first cohort of 20 Bachelor of Early Childhood Development (ECD) graduates. One of the graduates from the cohort, Ms Brandina Talumba Rashid, said she was happy to be among the first graduates of the programme. She added that throughout her studies, she had gained various skills such as teamwork.

“I have mastered patience, as dealing with children requires you to be kind and patient in order to help them effectively. In addition, I have learnt how to treat each person with dignity and respect, because as an early childhood practitioner, I work with many people who may not have a degree but have experience that I do not have,” she said.

Annually, the university celebrates the achievements of its students who have completed their studies at all levels. The second congregation is expected to be held in August this year.
