ILLOVO Inspires the Next Generation of Leaders
The University of Malawi (UNIMA) often takes advantage of the relationship that it has with the industry, to provide opportunities for students or their representatives to learn about how life is in the world of employment.
Such an opportunity arose when the University Registrar, Mr Martin Matululu, was invited to attend the Illovo Sugar Manager-in-Training Conference at Protea Ryalls Hotel on 25th September, 2025. The Registrar took with him the Speaker of the University of Malawi Students Association, Mr Joel Vilix Chigalu, to attend alongside him.
The event was mainly focused on trainee managers at Illovo. It was organized by the company to acknowledge the work that the managers-in-training have been doing at the company. In that regard, various Illovo staff members made presentations focusing on the work within their departments. Some of the outstanding staff were recognized through various awards for their work.
Reflecting on the conference, Mr Chigalu observed the need to equip young leaders with essential leadership and management skills to drive meaningful change. It was observed that universities need to promote adaptability and a mind-set of continuous learning among students, noting that classroom knowledge alone may not be sufficient for success in today’s fast-changing world.
He observed that the MIT conference is a key platform for university students to connect with industry leaders, gain insights into corporate leadership, and explore potential career paths within Illovo and beyond.
