LAW FACULTY HOSTS GENDER CONFERENCE

Chancellor College through its Faculty of Law hosted a two-day Gender Justice international conference from 21st to 22nd March under the theme “African perspectives on Gender justice and equality”. The conference took place at the Faculty of Law boardroom.

Speaking during the opening session of the conference, Gender justice clinic coordinator Dr. Ngcimezile Mbano Mweso said that the main aim of the conference was to offer a platform for reflections, critique, debate and opportunities to learn, educate, celebrate and engage with others on efforts for gender equality and justice.

Taking his turn, Dean of the Faculty of Law, Dr Sunduzwayo Madise, applauded the gender justice clinic for organizing the conference which offered tangible strategies on how to achieve gender justice and equality in all African societies using locally acceptable tools.

Guest of Honor at the function Ms Seodi White, who is also Chief Director of Public Reform in the office of the President and Cabinet, was full of praise for Chancellor college for the strides it is making in promoting gender justice and equality.

Keynote speaker at the conference, Professor Patricia Kameri Mbote from the University of Kenya pointed out that all over the world countries recognize that equal rights should exist between men and women. However, the fact remains that women have fewer opportunities than men to benefit from. It is for that reason that she congratulated Chancellor College for organizing the conference to address such issues in an African way.

During the conference a record total of 26 papers were presented which the Faculty of Law has promised to publish for others to read.

The conference drew participants from Malawi, Zimbabwe, Zambia, South Africa and Kenya among other countries.
