Law takes Disability Legal Clinic to Thondwe Market

As one way of carrying out its outreach programs, University of Malawi’s Chancellor College through the Faculty of Law, held a disability legal clinic at Thondwe market on 26th April, 2017. Coincidentally this happened to be a market day and multitudes of people thronged the place to receive various legal services, which were mainly offered by students in the faculty.

Speaking on the sidelines of the clinic, Program Coordinator of the disability legal clinic, Dr. Enock Chilemba expressed delight with the turnout of the community. He said that the clinic is geared to provide free clinical legal aid to persons with disabilities, those who are affected by disabilities and those people who are facing issues that are touching on disability rights.

Chilemba further said that he and the students felt duty bound to go to Thondwe Market to offer people opportunities to access free legal services since not everybody can manage to travel to Chikanda in Zomba, where the Clinic is stationed. Chilemba highlighted positives out of such outreach programs, citing the exposure of cases of people living with albinism who have been assisted previously. He also said that the clinic offers law students the opportunity to fine-tune their skills in a fast-paced, live-client setting under the careful guidance and supervision of their lecturers.

The Chairperson of Thondwe Market, Mr Phiri thanked Chancellor College, specifically the Law Faculty, for holding the clinic at Thondwe Market, a decision that benefited many people.
