SLEG Recognises Outstanding Staff at 2025 Excellence Awards
For the third consecutive year, the School of Law, Economics and Government (SLEG) organised its Staff Excellence Awards, an initiative designed to celebrate the accomplishments of academic staff who demonstrated exceptional performance across various categories.
The 2025 awards ceremony was held on 20th March, 2026, at the Wadonda Lecture Theatre, where eight staff members were honoured for their contributions in research and resource mobilisation.
Awards were presented in categories such as Best Book Publication, Best Journal Publication, Best Resource Mobiliser, and Best Rising Star. The first position in each category was awarded MK1,000,000, while the second and third positions were awarded with MK500,000 and MK300,000, respectively. Those who attained awards included Prof. Lewis Dzimbiri, Dr. Tiyesere Chikapa, Dr. Gowokani Chirwa, Ms. Maureen Kapanga, Dr. Martin Mwale, Mr. Edward Lemani, Dr. Ngcimezile Mbano-Mweso and Dr. Farai Chigaru.
Speaking at the event, Executive Dean of the School, Professor Happy Kayuni, highlighted the positive impact of the awards since their introduction. He noted that, in earlier years, levels of academic publishing and resource mobilisation were relatively low, but the initiative has since driven significant improvement in both areas.
“This is the third time we are hosting these awards, and we have seen remarkable progress in staff performance, particularly in publications and resource mobilisation,” he said.
One of the award recipients, Dr Martin Mwale, commended the School’s management for sustaining the initiative, describing it as a powerful source of motivation. He added that the awards not only encourage academic staff but also inspire students who aspire to pursue careers in academia. He further urged his colleagues to continue striving for excellence.
The awards reflect the School’s ongoing commitment to recognising achievement and promoting a culture of excellence, in line with the University’s broader mission to advance high standards in teaching, research, and innovation.
