The University of Malawi Claims Victory at PUSSAM Games for Second Consecutive Year
The University of Malawi has once again emerged as the overall winner of the Public Universities Staff Sports Association of Malawi (PUSSAM) Games, claiming the title for the second year in a row.
This year’s event, held on Saturday, 26th July 2025, was hosted by UNIMA at its main campus.
This year’s theme for the games, “Compete, Connect, Celebrate” perfectly aligned with the objectives of the games which are to bring together members of staff from all six Malawian public universities to foster interaction through various sports such as football, netball, pool, tug of war, and more.
The official opening of the games was presided over by the UNIMA Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Sunduzwayo Madise, who was the guest of honour.
In his remarks, Dr. Madise emphasised the importance of unity and collaboration among the universities.
“To me, what is more important is the interaction between staff members from the universities. Yes, we want to win, but I think we must compete in a manner that fosters friendship,” he said. “We can call this the Friendship Games, where all public universities come together, share fun, network with each other, relax, and enjoy sports.”
UNIMA dominated the competition, securing five gold medals and one bronze, topping the medal table and once again earning the overall winner’s title.
One of the standout performers was Bernadetta Kwimbira Nzika, a UNIMA member of staff and FIFA referee, who claimed three gold medals in the women’s 40-and-above athletics category, in the 100m, 400m, and 800m races.
“When I heard that we were hosting the games, I thought it would be wise to contribute some gold medals to Team UNIMA and help ensure we retained the overall victory as the hosts,” said Mrs. Nzika. “Having achieved this, I am very happy and now look forward to next year’s event to defend our title.”
This achievement is a repeat of her performance in the 2020 PUSSAM Games in which she also claimed three gold medals in similar races.
She attributes her consistent performance to her regular training as a FIFA referee, where she trains a minimum of four sessions a week to maintain the required match fitness.
UNIMA’s continued success at the PUSSAM Games reflects not only its athletic talent but also its strong commitment to staff wellness.
The university actively promotes physical activity through initiatives such as long-distance big walks and other fitness events programmes that help keep staff members active, healthy, and united.
