UNIMA celebrates academic achievements of 2025 graduates
On 29th August 2025, the University of Malawi celebrated the academic achievements of 1,345 women and men who successfully completed their studies at the institution. The graduation ceremony was presided over by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Samson Sajidu. It was also attended by the Minister of Higher Education, Dr. Jessie Kabwila, the Chairperson of the UNIMA Council, Dr. Christopher Guta, UNIMA Executive Deans, staff members and other officials from various institutions.
During the ceremony, Professor Sajidu congratulated all the graduates, noting that the University continues to make strides in teaching, research, innovation, and community service. He highlighted some of the recent milestones, including research initiatives undertaken over the past four months and the establishment of a Food and Technology Hub, which focuses on developing technologies to improve agri-food systems.
He also extended his gratitude to the lecturers for their hard work, mentorship, and guidance, which have shaped the graduates into the professionals they are becoming. “We do not take your commitment for granted,” he said.
One of the graduates, Ms. Chrissy Ulemu, who became the first female student to earn a distinction in Public Administration, remarked that her achievement was a way of changing history and opening doors for other girls still pursuing their dreams. She explained that during her studies, she engaged in leadership activities, volunteered, and participated in trainings that strengthened her academically and personally. This balance, she said, opened new opportunities, including a scholarship to study in the United States for a semester – an experience that transformed her career. “My message to every girl out there: there is no limit to what you can achieve. Focus on your goals, work hard, and put God first. Don’t box yourself into academics alone. Explore opportunities, invest in yourself, and grow in every way you can. I may be the first girl to graduate with a distinction in Public Administration, but I refuse to be the last.”
The Chairperson of UNIMA Council, Dr. Guta, also addressed the graduates, reminding them that the world they are entering is complex, full of challenges, but also rich with opportunities. He urged them to dream big and embrace continuous learning as a key aspect of professional growth. “I encourage you to stay connected to UNIMA, which today becomes your alma mater. Our alumni are our pride, and as you join this community, we count on you not only to represent this University to the world but also to help shape its future,” he said.
