UNIMA CRAFS Empowering Local Farmers Through Digital Innovation
As part of its ongoing field visits to CRAFS-CARP-E grantees across Malawi to appreciate progress, document impact, and showcase how research-based innovations are transforming livelihoods and strengthening local enterprises, the Centre for Resilient Agri-Food Systems (CRAFS), through the Community Actionable Research Projects for Enterprise (CARP-E) initiative, on 17 June 2026, visited Gusher Labs in Chiradzulu.
Founded by Kondwani Nantchito, Gusher Labs received a CARP-E grant of US$ 5,000 to advance the development of its proof of concept, the Mnzeru Mkupangwa App, a digital Farmers Community Hub designed to support smallholder farmers through improved access to information, markets, and agricultural services.
The Mnzeru Mkupangwa App aims to bridge knowledge gaps in the agricultural sector, help farmers connect directly to markets, and reduce their dependence on intermediaries. The platform also provides a one-stop digital hub where farmers can access learning resources, market opportunities, and real-time support.
With CARP-E support, Gusher Labs has successfully progressed from a Minimum Viable Product (MVP) to a more comprehensive platform, with all major application modules developed. This support has enabled the team to refine the product, expand its functionality, and move closer to full deployment for farming communities across Malawi.
The app is expected to operate under a hybrid monetisation model that combines free and premium services. Users will be able to access basic features at no cost, while advanced content and enhanced functionality will be available through subscription-based premium packages.
By leveraging digital technology to improve access to knowledge, markets, and advisory services, the Mnzeru Mkupangwa App has the potential to enhance agricultural productivity, strengthen farmer networks, and contribute to the growth of Malawi's agri-food sector.
The field visit highlighted the important role that innovation and technology can play in addressing challenges faced by farmers and demonstrated how CARP-E, through the University of Malawi's Centre for Resilient Agri-Food Systems, is helping transform promising ideas into impactful solutions that strengthen livelihoods, improve food systems, and contribute to Malawi's socio-economic development.
