UNIMA Reinforces Its Position as Malawi's Leading University with 2026 THE Ranking

Barely a few weeks after being ranked Malawi's number one university in the 2026 Center for World University Rankings (CWUR) Global 2000 and becoming the country's only university to feature among the world's top 2,000 institutions, the University of Malawi (UNIMA) has achieved yet another remarkable milestone as it has once again been ranked as Malawi’s number one university in the prestigious Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings 2026.

The university has been placed in the 601–800 global band, making it the highest-ranked university in Malawi.

The Times Higher Education Impact Rankings assess universities worldwide based on their contributions toward achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and UNIMA has earned its impressive ranking through strong performances in several key areas.

The university scored between 64.2 and 68.0 in SDG 4 (Quality Education), between 53.8 and 60.4 in SDG 13 (Climate Action), and between 54.3 and 59.1 in SDG 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions).

UNIMA participated in the rankings alongside three other public universities from Malawi, two of which were placed in the 801–1000 global band, while the third fell into the 1001–1500 bracket.

In the previous edition of the rankings, UNIMA did not participate, allowing LUANAR to emerge as Malawi's highest-ranked institution. However, with its debut participation in the 2026 rankings, UNIMA has reaffirmed its long-standing reputation as the country's leading university by securing the top national position.

For decades, UNIMA has been widely regarded as Malawi's premier institution of higher learning, renowned for academic excellence, research, innovation, and the production of highly skilled graduates.

This latest achievement provides international recognition of the university's commitment to quality education, sustainable development, and positive societal impact.

The ranking not only highlights UNIMA's growing global reputation but also reflects the significant contributions its graduates continue to make across various sectors, both within Malawi and internationally.

This accomplishment is a proud moment for UNIMA, its students, alumni, staff, and the nation as a whole, demonstrating that higher learning institutions in Malawi can compete on the global stage while making meaningful contributions to sustainable development
