Bertha is senior lecturer in Macroeconomics who holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Cape Town, RSA, focusing on international macroeconomics. She also holds a Masters degree in International and Development Economics from the Australian University and a Bachelor of Social Science (Economics and Sociology) from the University of Malawi. Bertha has received training in many fields of economics which includes Econometrics, Statistics, Mathematics for Economics, Real Business Cycles (RBC) models, Dynamics Stochastic General Equilibrium (DSGE) models, Resource Economics, The Role of Financial Markets and Instruments for Economic Management and Development, Labour Economics and Industrial Relations, Quantitative International Economics, The Global Trading System, Open Economy Macroeconomics, Finance and Development among others. She has worked with Wadonda Consult as a researcher and supervisor for one year, the Ministry of Industry and Trade as a Policy and Business Development Officer and also as a Desk Officer for a World Bank’s BESTAP Project for 11 years. She also worked for the Catholic University as a Senior Lecturer for one year and also at the Malawi University of Science and Technology (MUST) for almost 5 years where she also coordinated the Open and Distance e-Learning (ODeL) and Business Studies Section Postgraduate Programmes. Currently, Bertha is working as a Senior Lecturer in macroeconomics where she also doubles as the Director of Resource Mobilisation for the Department of Economics. She has conducted various studies and researches with both international and domestic organisations including Resonance (USA), UNCTAD, OXFAM, Democracy International, Global Partners among others. Bertha is an external examiner for the University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, University of Lesotho, Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS), University of Namibia and Mzuzu University. She also sits in the Programme Advisory Committee of Masters in Applied Econometrics at the Namibia University of Science and Technology. Bertha is sat in the Monetary Policy Committee of the Reserve Bank from 2022 to 2025 and also serves in the Board of the Deposit Insurance Corporation and Civil Aviation Authority. She is the current President of the Economics Association of Malawi.
