Profile

Dr Elias Peter Mwakilama is both a data scientist and an Associate Professor in Mathematical Sciences at the University of Malawi, with a PhD in Computational Mathematics from the PAU-Institute of Basic Sciences & Technology Innovation (PAUSTI) and Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture & Technology in Nairobi, Kenya. He possesses strong data consulting background in both quantitative and qualitative research studies. His research area of interest spans across Computational Mathematics and Applied Statistics in Operations Research (OR), including Climate and Environmental Sciences. Also, Elias has an MSc in Mathematical Sciences and a BSc (distinction) in Mathematics & Statistics obtained in 2017 and 2012, respectively. Besides, he is the alumnus of YALI Regional Leadership Center Southern Africa (2020), CODATA-RDA Summer Schools, of the CODATA Trieste (Aug, 2016) and China (Jun, 2017) Training Workshops. From 2018 to 2019, Elias was a School of Data Research fellow who provided data mentorship expertise for the “Public Procurement Process and Extractive industry Open Contract” platform for three CSOs in Malawi led by Hivos organization with support from Open Knowledge Foundation (UK). He has participated in a number of research consultancies as either Principal Investigator, Co-Pi, Statistician, Trainer, or M & E specialist. He is much conversant with R, Stata, Matlab, Excel and SPSS for data management and programming. Currently he is a research fellow with University of Sussex in areas of applied mathematics and statistics for disease and crime modelling.
