Education: 1989 – 1993 BED (Humanities), Latin and Classics as a major with French as a minor. University of Malawi, Chancellor College 1993 September – December- Taught Latin at Blantyre Secondary School. After joining UNIMA in 1994 as a Staff Associate, I earned additional degrees: BA (Hons) in Classics from University of South Africa; MA (Language Education – Latin) from University of Malawi, thesis title was: ‘Using the Communicative Approach to Latin reading at Junior level in Malawi’. And a second MA in Ancient Languages and Cultures from University of South Africa, thesis title: ‘Myth and Treatment of Non-Human Animals in Classical and African Cultures: A comparative Study’. I completed my PhD in 2016 under a joint Scotland -Malawi PhD program, supervised jointly by my home university (under Prof. Emerita Moira Chimombo) and by Prof. Roger David Rees of the School of Classics at the University of St Andrews, Scotland UK as part of the co-tutelle arrangement between the two universities. My study included two spells in St Andrews, where inter alia I was able to research the important contribution to Malawian Classics made by the late R.M. Ogilvie – Robin Ogilvie. The title of my PhD was ‘Contextualising Classics Teaching in Malawi: A Comparative Study’. Research Interests My interests lie in pedagogical and curriculum strategies for teaching Classics as a way of decolonizing Classics. Largely, I extend my research by interrogating how cultures of the Greco-Roman world have shaped the history of ideas in the modern world. I have taught courses bordering on: Latin language and literature; Classical Tradition and Classical Reception studies; Historical linguistics (specifically for Italic, Hellenic and Germanic branches); Word Origins; Historical Archaeology; Greek and Roman Art and Architecture; and Language pedagogy in general and Latin and Classics Education in particular.
