ADVERT FOR THE POSITION OF PROFESSOR/ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR/SENIOR LECTURER/LECTURER/ASSISTANT LECTURER IN CLASSICS (readvertisement)

The Department of Languages, Linguistics, and Classical Studies (LLCS) in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences (SHSS) at the University of Malawi invites applications for a full-time position in Classics at the rank of Professor, Associate Professor, Senior Lecturer, Lecturer or Assistant Lecturer. We seek a dynamic scholar with expertise in Greek and Roman literature and religion, committed to excellence in teaching, research, and curriculum innovation.

The successful candidate will join a vibrant team of three full-time faculty, one part-time lecturer, and three tutors, contributing to our undergraduate programmes, including: BA Humanities; BA (Languages and Linguistics); BEd (Languages); BEd (Social Studies). Candidates applying for the position of Assistant Lecturer must be prepared to enrol in and complete a relevant Master’s degree within three years of appointment.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Candidates applying for the Lecturer position must hold a Master’s or PhD in classics, along with a Bachelor's degree majoring in classics with a minimum award of credit.

  • For the post of Senior Lecturer, Associate Professor, or Professor, candidates must have a strong record of publications in their field of expertise and demonstrate initiative in research, community outreach, and engagement in addition to meeting the required minimum qualifications listed above.

  • Teaching expertise in Greek and Roman literature, religion, or related fields, with a proven record of delivering engaging university-level lectures, seminars, and tutorials.

  • Proficiency in Latin and/or Ancient Greek, with the ability to teach from beginner to advanced levels.

  • Active research profile (publications, conference papers, or grant applications) in Classical Studies.

  • Experience in curriculum development and innovative pedagogy (e.g., digital tools, interdisciplinary approaches).

Desirable:

  • Competence in modern languages (e.g., German, French, Italian) for research purposes.

  • Knowledge of classical history, archaeology, or reception studies.

  • Experience in student supervision, mentorship, or academic leadership.

  • Engagement with decolonisation initiatives in Classical Studies.

Key Responsibilities

Teaching & Learning

  • Deliver high-quality instruction in Classics, including face-to-face and online formats (lectures, tutorials, problem-based learning).

  • Supervise undergraduate (and potentially postgraduate) research projects.

  • Contribute to curriculum design and assessment, fostering a research-led learning environment.

Research & Scholarship

  • Maintain an active research agenda, with publications in reputable journals or presses.

  • Pursue collaborative research projects and external funding opportunities.

Service & Engagement

  • Participate in departmental committees, outreach programmes, and public lectures.

  • Support the growth of Classical Studies at the University of Malawi and beyond.
