Cartographer (UM 10) (1 position)

 Qualifications & Attributes

Applicants should possess the following qualifications and attributes:

  • Diploma in Cartography, Surveying or Geo-informatics; or Diploma in geography with specialised training in the related field of cartography, map analysis and surveying techniques;

  • 3 years’ experience in cartographic environment involving preparation of maps and surveying work.

  • Registered members of a relevant professional body e.g. surveyors’ institute of Malawi or Malawi Institute of Physical Planning.

Key Roles and Responsibilities

  1. Participating in the preparation or review of work plans, policies, work manuals, laboratory report books, procedures and related documentation;

  2. Ordering of cartographic materials, equipment and other requisites for the department;

  3. Offering technical advice as may be required by academic staff for their research and teaching work;

  4. Demonstrating techniques and procedures to students during cartographic laboratory sessions;

  5. Preparing cartographic laboratories in digital mapping;

  6. Ensuring maintenance of all infrastructure, equipment and instruments in the department and coordinating field courses in the Department of Geography and Earth Sciences;

  7. Participating in the preparation of the Departmental budget;

  8. Maintaining an updated inventory of all laboratory equipment and requisites, records on stock and other reports on laboratory operations;

  9. Ensuring adherence to safety standards and providing First Aid to accident victims;

  10. Participating in the preparation of quarterly and annual operational performance.
