Professor/ Senior Lecturer/ Lecturer in Classics

The Department of Languages, Linguistics, and Classical Studies (LLCS) in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences (SHSS) at the University of Malawi invites applications for a full-time position in Classics at the rank of Professor, Senior Lecturer, or Lecturer. We seek a dynamic scholar with expertise in Greek and Roman literature and religion, committed to excellence in teaching, research, and curriculum innovation.

The successful candidate will join a vibrant team of 4 full-time faculty, 1 part-time lecturer, and 3 tutors, contributing to our undergraduate programs, including: BA Humanities; BA (Languages and Linguistics); BEd (Languages); BEd (Social Studies).

  1. Qualifications and Experience

  2. Essential:

  • A Master's degree in Classics is required; a PhD in Classics (or near completion) is strongly preferred.

  • Teaching expertise in Greek and Roman literature, religion, or related fields, with a proven record of delivering engaging university-level lectures, seminars, and tutorials.

  • Proficiency in Latin and/or Ancient Greek, with the ability to teach from beginner to advanced levels.

  • Active research profile (publications, conference papers, or grant applications) in Classical Studies.

  • Experience in curriculum development and innovative pedagogy (e.g., digital tools, interdisciplinary approaches).

  1. Desirable:

  • Competence in modern languages (e.g., German, French, Italian) for research purposes.

  • Knowledge of classical history, archaeology, or reception studies.

  • Experience in student supervision, mentorship, or academic leadership.

  • Engagement with decolonisation initiatives in Classical Studies.

  2. Teaching & Learning

  • Deliver high-quality instruction in Classics, including face-to-face and online formats (lectures, tutorials, problem-based learning).

  • Supervise undergraduate (and potentially postgraduate) research projects.

  • Contribute to curriculum design and assessment, fostering a research-led learning environment.

  1. Research & Scholarship

  • Maintain an active research agenda, with publications in reputable journals or presses.

  • Pursue collaborative research projects and external funding opportunities.

  1. Service & Engagement

  • Participate in departmental committees, outreach programs, and public lectures.

  • Support the growth of Classical Studies at the University of Malawi and beyond.
