The Department of Academic Skills and Careers was born out of what was previously known as the Language and Communication Skills (LACS), housed in the Faculty of Humanities. LACS has for years been a service department offering English for Specific Purposes to all first year students and some second year ones across the schools. It also has been hosting the Bachelor of Arts in Communication & Cultural Studies (BACCS) programme. The Academic Skills and Careers department continues to offer the English for Specific Purposes courses and in addition, has plans to introduce a Bachelor of Arts in Writing and Rhetoric programme. The department also plans to have a section that will be providing Editing Services to local and external learners, researchers such as those involved in thesis writing, journal articles, book chapters, among other scholarly and commercial texts.
