Department of Biological Sciences

The Department of Biological Sciences deals with the life sciences discipline that is rapidly evolving and developing. In general, the Department enables students to acquire vast knowledge and practical skills relating to plant and animal cells and organisms, their anatomy, physiology and how they interact with the physical and biological environment. Such knowledge and skills can be used to effectively solve real life problems in the medical and health sector, biodiversity conservation and management, aquatic and terrestrial ecosystem restoration and environmental management.

Programmes in the department are structured in a way that students and graduates are well equipped for various botanical, zoological, ecological and applied biology professional, scientific and technical careers. The programmes lay a solid foundation for graduates to pursue postgraduate courses in applied and emerging biological sciences and related fields such as natural resource management, ethnobotany, biodiversity, wildlife management, environmental management, climate change, biochemical industry, biotechnology, aquaculture and fisheries sciences. The Department offers four programmes as follows: one undergraduate programme and three postgraduate programmes, namely: PhD in Biological Sciences (by Research), Master of Science in Biological Sciences (by research) and Master of Science in Conservation Biology (taught).
