The Department of Music and Dance is one of the newer departments at the University of Malawi, having evolved from what was previously known as the Music Section of the Fine and Performing Arts Department. The department offers modules geared towards the academic appreciation of music and its theory, with practical examples from Malawi and the region. The department has a strong ethnomusicology base, and further trains students in voice articulation and performance. Additionally, the department engages students in the appreciation of many of Malawi’s cultural dances, critically appreciating their aesthetic as well as social values, and their connection to the wider cultural fabric of the nation. The department has a staff profile that includes veteran music academicians, but also occasionally invites practicing professionals for guest lectures.
