ACB appreciates UNIMA IIC Drive
The University of Malawi Institutional Integrity Committee (IIC) hosted officials from the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on 27th June 2025 at the University Office Boardroom. The UNIMA team was led by the Chairperson of the UNIMA IIC, Dr. Samson McJessie-Mbewe. The purpose of the meeting was to allow the ACB to conduct a compliance monitoring exercise to assess the performance and effectiveness of the UNIMA IIC in fulfilling its mandate.
The UNIMA IIC is mandated to promote integrity, transparency, and accountability across the University. It plays a vital role in spearheading the implementation of anti-corruption initiatives in line with the National Anti-Corruption Strategy (NACS II). This includes raising awareness on ethical conduct, reporting on integrity activities, coordinating anti-corruption campaigns, and supporting a culture of zero tolerance for corruption within the institution.
The three ACB officials present were Mrs. Yamikani Tembo, Mr. Ackim Mkolongo, and Mr. Emmanuel Mwamughunda, all representing the Corruption Prevention Department. During the meeting, discussions focused on the Committee’s implementation of its 2024/2025 Annual Work Plan, reporting practices, participation in national anti-corruption efforts, publicity of integrity messages, record-keeping, and areas for improvement.
In his remarks, the secretary of the University of Malawi IIC, Mr. Gilbert Nyong’onya, noted that engagement with ACB officials is essential for accountability and continuous improvement. “The ACB provides independent oversight on the effectiveness of our integrity efforts and offers technical guidance on strengthening our internal anti-corruption mechanisms,” he said. “Their feedback helps us identify gaps, align with national standards, and enhance our impact both within the University and in the broader public service context.” The UNIMA IIC plans to carry out several activities, including orientation sessions on integrity and anti-corruption for student leaders, union representatives, heads of departments, and deans, among others.
