UMSSA volleyball team maintains intervarsity championship

The University of Malawi Staff Sports Association (UMSSA) volleyball team has retained the Volleyball Trophy after emerging champions in the second Intervarsity games that took place at the Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Bunda Campus, from 28th to 29th May 2022.

On the other hand, the netball team maintained the second position after KUHES and walked away with K100,000 from the Guest of Honor, the LUANAR Vice Chancellor Professor Emmanuel Kaunda, at the event. A number of players have also earned both silver and gold medals after doing extremely well in individual games and activities like chess and athletics.

According to UMSSA President, Mr. Martin Likongwe, UMSSA has a bright future as he is seeing improvements in different aspects regarding members’ commitment to training and participation. For instance, Likongwe pointed out that UMSSA has not had participants in certain disciplines in the past tournaments but this time around had participants for all activities.

Likongwe also pointed out challenges that might have affected UMSSA’s performance at the tournament: “Time was one issue that was a challenge. All the games were played in a single day which meant players had to play three or more games consecutively. For individual games, our competitors had so many participants as compared to us. We failed because only a few of us registered. I therefore encourage our members to register for the next games because these individual games bring more medals. Also, our competitors in games like darts participate in regional leagues and perfect their skills but there is no functional league here in the eastern region,” he explained.

UMSSA was competing with staff from LUANAR, MZUNI, KUHES, MUST and MUBAS in team sporting activities like football, netball, volleyball, darts and pool as well as individual games like chess, bawo, draft, athletics and nguli.
