Staff Spotlight: Meet Ms. Mupu Chonzi Mtonda

Meet Ms. Mupu Chonzi Mtonda, a Senior Human Resource Officer at the University of Malawi (UNIMA), whose passion for people, employee development and workplace culture continues to shape her work.

Ms. Chonzi joined UNIMA on 4th May 2015 and has since built her career in human resource management, supporting the University’s efforts to foster a positive and productive working environment.

She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Human Resource Management, which she obtained in 2018, and a Master’s degree in Human Resource Management and Industrial Relations from the University of Malawi, which she obtained in 2026.

What excites Ms. Chonzi most about her role is the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on both the institution and its people. She is passionate about fostering a positive work environment, supporting employee growth, and ensuring that human resource strategies contribute to UNIMA’s goals.

She particularly enjoys talent development, employee engagement and initiatives that enhance workplace culture. Seeing employees thrive and knowing that her work contributes to their success and to UNIMA’s growth is what she finds most fulfilling. She also enjoys solving complex HR issues and continuously improving policies to foster a more inclusive and supportive work environment.

“What makes UNIMA stand out for me is its rich academic heritage, commitment to excellence, and its role in shaping some of the brightest minds in Malawi and beyond,” she says.

Ms. Chonzi says she enjoys being part of a community that brings together students and staff from diverse backgrounds, fostering collaboration and intellectual engagement. She takes pride in contributing to an institution that not only equips students with knowledge but also promotes values such as integrity, social responsibility and problem-solving.

Beyond her professional responsibilities, Ms. Chonzi enjoys listening to Country and Western music, travelling, and exploring different places and cultures. She also cherishes spending quality time with her family and participating in church activities, which she says provide her with a sense of fulfilment and spiritual growth.

Her message to fellow staff members is one of appreciation and encouragement. She commends their dedication and hard work in making UNIMA a centre of excellence and urges continued collaboration and mutual support.

“Together, we can create an environment in which innovation, integrity, and professionalism flourish,” she says.

To students, Ms. Chonzi reminds them that they are at the heart of the University and encourages them to make full use of the resources, guidance and opportunities available to them.
